The South America House in the Cologne Zoo

The grand opening of the new designed ‘South America House’ was an important step for the Cologne Zoo in its animal husbandry and its visitor guidance. The extensive structural restoration of the historic building, built in 1899, extended from April 2019 to March 2021 and it created a unique rain forest landscape for various species which allows visitors to walk freely.

On 1200 square meters the ‘South America House’ offers now living space for monkeys, piranhas, salt cats, birds and sloths. The reconstruction of this traditional building, which is a listed monument, allows the visitors to have a close up experience of the fascinating wildlife of South America. The integration of near-natural elements and the creation of generous open spaces offer the animals an environment which considers animal welfare and which is close to their natural environment.

The structural restoration was implemented considering modern standards of husbandry and ecological aspects. This means that not only the historic atmosphere of the building was conserved but also innovative techniques were integrated to improve the animal welfare and the guidance of the visitors. Now the visitors can walk around an impressive rainforest atmosphere and can observe the species in their near-natural surrounding.

With the opening of the ‘South America House’ the Cologne Zoo contributes to preserve biodiversity and to support education and environmental protection.
